Subject: [ClassOf80] finally!!

Two weeks ago, I applied for a second job and notified the church that I?d have to be free to leave on time several evenings a week. Before I told the church about my 2nd job, I actually had rented an apartment I found?in faith that I would be able to pay for it with 2 jobs. Well, it led the church to ask me to stay on and they raised my pay to an amount I could rent the apartment on! Needless to say, I was happy for the outcome.
The apartment is above a restaurant on Main Street in Georgetown. The lady who owns the rest. goes to my church and owns the apart. too. It's huge and old but has lots of character. For now, I'm just excited to have my own place after 18 mos. of roaming around the country!!? 
The job is going well though they continue to pile more and more responsibility on me. I have been overwhelmed by all I need to do and am not sure how I will manage but will give it my best and am grateful to have a job!!??
Thanks so much for those who?ve wondered what happened to me the last 3 months. I?ve been sick 3 times in the last 5 weeks (now on antibiotics and my apart. will be warm) plus I was working 9 hr. days straight through and basically just going home to eat and sleep. 
I hope life will settle down now and find a healthier balance!!

Ok you all,
We are taking our trip soon to Kenya.
We will be going on a safari and to the beach for a few days too.
I need to know more about what to expect since my husband is telling
me about running from lions and swimming away from sharks and all kinds
of other critter stories. So please tell me what in the world this trip will
most likely be like. hahahh   Of course finally convinced my friend that
armed soldiers would not be escorting me off the runway into the airport. 
ahhahah
So any input would be appreciated since you ALL know Steve well!!!!!!!!

The sharks aren't a real bother, and the lions well ignore them, but the
snipes, well watch your step... one miss step and the great horned
indoaustralious snipe will strike...with maybe less than life threatening
suddenness but still frightening swiftness.

Steve is probably trying to protect you from some of the more esoteric
dangers of the Dark Continent, but the dangers are real...watch out

Ok and snipes are???? See I am going to stay in the tent or the van. hahahha 
My friend sent me all these videos of the T. man eating Lions. So far in our 
travels, the only animals we had to contend with was Monkeys trying to take 
Steves shoes while he was swimming. This sounds much much more to worry

Johnathan: I just got off the phone with Jennifer and she is so worried about the snipes now. OK Jenny - don't go out and go potty at night without a flashlight!  I once
went out and squatted and then discovered in the moonlight I was squatting
amidst several large black scorpions.  It's a miracle I didn't get stung.  I
discovered how loudly I could scream that day!!!

Sheri: Hey calling me a NUT as well as the rest of the group.....well I remember my times in Kenya quite vivilidy- being chased by elephants, seeing humongous pythons and other snakes all about, having monkeys chase you for food.. So I guess you have just pushed those scarey times out of your memory...

Jenny,
I concur w/ Heidi and Steve. I had my share of snake encounters; many in the 
outhouse. A monkey stole the banana I was eating, and baboons stole our 
picnic lunch once. Hippo and buffalo can be very fierce. My dorm dad took a 
picture of a lion stalking a gazelle from outside the car. Elephant crossing 
stops were frequent on the way to Mombasa; but no incidents. Generally, if 
you don't mess w/ them, they won't mess w/ you unless you accidently get 
close to young or are in the way of an angry animal. I wouldn't live in 
fear, but I'd keep a flashlight handy at night and mind where you're going 
on paths especially if around tall grass or rocks.

Mombasa is terrific and animal dangers low. Been there many times w/o 
incident, but wear sneakers on the reef.

Have a BLAST! So glad you 2 can go!

Ok ya'll are not informing Jennifer of the real dangers of Africa...I know some of you have some horror stories that you remember- Heidi I forgot about them scorpions... just glad I was not around them that much... I think I have Jennifer not worried about the eel when we go goggling but need to keep an eye on sea urchins....ya'll be good...steve

Janice: Just come on and go with us. Would not mind you coiming along and sharing the take the Jennifer to the OUTHOUSE DUTIES a couple times a night... I am sure she will have some wonderful memories of close encounters whether with an elephant, buffalo, sea urchin, lion fish, eels or just a mamba or two... And I forgot about the trip betweem Nairobi and Mombasa and am sure those elephants are still pesky as ever... Hope ya'll all had a great Easter...Steve

OK Jenny - don't go out and go potty at night without a flashlight!  I once
went out and squatted and then discovered in the moonlight I was squatting
amidst several large black scorpions.  It's a miracle I didn't get
stung.  I
discovered how loudly I could scream that day!!!

My friend sent me all these videos of the T. man eating Lions. So far in our

travels, the only animals we had to contend with was Monkeys trying to take 
Steves shoes while he was swimming. This sounds much much more to worry

Johnathan: I just got off the phone with Jennifer and she is so worried
about the snipes now. I forgot to tell her of the snipes and watching our
steps...I've mentioned the eels, sharks and sea urchins while at the beach,
then the elephants, hippos, lions, leopards, monkeys and babbons while we
are tenting it at the Parks....So if any of ya'll have your favorite animal
stories to tell Jennifer tell them....thanks for this...I really appreciate

Sheri: Hey calling me a NUT as well as the rest of the group.....well I
remember my times in Kenya quite vivilidy- being chased by elephants, seeing
humongous pythons and other snakes all about, having monkeys chase you for
food.. So I guess you have just pushed those scarey times out of your memory... 

 

Janice any news about Joel- hopefully the trial will just go away... and
further more don't sugar coat this trip for Jennifer- she needs to be very
scared....Be good. steve

Thank you all so much for all the advice and input. I do appreciate it so 
much. I am sure there is going to be much to watch out for.
Thank goodness I grew up in the country area and also live in that now. 
Guess I am used to watching for critters and such. The
bigger ones I'm not sure of but have been working out so I can outrun our 
guide. hahahahha I will share all our pics. I wish you all
could come with us. I know that would totally make an awesome trip. I am 
really looking foward to seeing where you all
grew up and share how special it is. Janice wish you were coming girl. I 
know I will have a ton of stories for you all when
we get back but hope none too bad. hahahah Once again thank you all for 
helping to raise Steve to be such a good guy.
I know you all helped each other form through the years and whoever got 
ahold of him the most thank you. He is a great
husband! Ok we live apart hahahaha but he is GREAT!

Steve; I agree with you about our times at R.V.A.... What good and some bad memories we can all write about... Just wish we could all meet at Mombasa and relive our Senior trip and maybe get ole fuddy duddy Deanna to dance this time...Be nice Deanna...

 

I think I have Jennifer as scared as I can about this trip-  Johnathans comment on the snipes, Heidi comment about the scorpions, the lions, buffalos, elephants and snakes running through the camps we are staying at...But in the end when she and I depart from Kenya she will understand my past and my love for that country where I grew up with a bunch of good friends. And I miss you all...steve

Jen; As we are all aware, Steve is trying to enlist our help in  
scaring you about the upcoming adventure to Kenya and what to expect.  
Knowing Steve as we all do, this is not as much for your awareness of  
African dangers, as it is for his own entertainment. And we love him  
for it.
You would think from a group such as ours that the tales of daring do,  
and missadventures would be pouring out non-stop. I think the problem  
here is that none of us can really think of anything that didn't at  
one point in our lives, seem just well...normal.
There is also the hesitancy of not delving into the random wildness  
that occured in our lives over the course of 15-20 years. Everyone has  
one instance where Africa tried to kill them, but the chances of it  
happening to you in such a short time span would have you feeling, on  
not having these experiences happen, of possibly having missed out on  
something during your visit to Kenya.

Great times at R.V.A we had- the after school chai times and toast made on a hot plate, or the times we would go to the duka for chai and madazzi's. Rooting for our classmates when they played their games, the hikes to Longonot or to that pool along the railroad track we would hike to... Nairobi shopping on Saturdays, Friday night going to our sponsors for chai and fellowship, catching quail when they migrated thru, having Joel as your roomate who loved snakes and kept them in the room, having Doug and Scott as roomates and waking me up and confusing me into making me do my chores at 10pm when I thought I was late to class... playing chicken with Mark and get stabbed with a knife..Hitchiking home on weekends when I knew it was a no no. Being late on coiming back after mid-break because I wanted to go fishing with my dad to Lake Rudolf and spending 6 weeks in detention for that...Taking dates to the Saturday movies.. our morning school meeting and chai afterwords. oh and being apart of John and Lynda pre wedding. Just some of my good memories of my times with my good friends...Take care all of you and hope to see you all at reuion.

Good memories Steve. :-)  So many of you are part of our lives before we
got married, which by the way wasn't until 1984; and like Jenny said, we
were all a big part of shaping each other's lives because our parents
weren't there for our day-to-day crises and triumphs, so we had each
other - something I still can't really explain to our kids.  Much as

we had and still have.

 

Have to say there is a little envy creeping in - but hope you all have
an awesome trip to the wilds of Kenya!  Look forward to hearing about it

Great times at R.V.A we had- the after school chai times and toast made
on a hot plate, or the times we would go to the duka for chai and
madazzi's. Rooting for our classmates when they played their games, the
hikes to Longonot or to that pool along the railroad track we would hike
to... Nairobi shopping on Saturdays, Friday night going to our sponsors
for chai and fellowship, catching quail when they migrated thru, having
Joel as your roomate who loved snakes and kept them in the room, having
Doug and Scott as roomates and waking me up and confusing me into making
me do my chores at 10pm when I thought I was late to class... playing
chicken with Mark and get stabbed with a knife..Hitchiking home on
weekends when I knew it was a no no. Being late on coiming back after
mid-break because I wanted to go fishing with my dad to Lake Rudolf and
spending 6 weeks in detention for that...Taking dates to the Saturday
movies.. our morning school meeting and chai afterwords. oh and being
apart of John and Lynda pre wedding. Just some of my good memories of my
times with my good friends...Take care all of you and hope to see you
all at reuion.

Jen; As we are all aware, Steve is trying to enlist our help in  
scaring you about the upcoming adventure to Kenya and what to expect.  
Knowing Steve as we all do, this is not as much for your awareness of  
African dangers, as it is for his own entertainment. And we love him  
for it.
You would think from a group such as ours that the tales of daring do,  
and missadventures would be pouring out non-stop. I think the problem  
here is that none of us can really think of anything that didn't at  
one point in our lives, seem just well...normal.
There is also the hesitancy of not delving into the random wildness  
that occured in our lives over the course of 15-20 years. Everyone has  
one instance where Africa tried to kill them, but the chances of it  
happening to you in such a short time span would have you feeling, on  
not having these experiences happen, of possibly having missed out on  
something during your visit to Kenya.

Yes Dan, I didn't survive being married to this crazy man without knowing
a little of his twisted form of entertainment. hahahha  I grew up with
two older brothers doing the same so very used to being scammed. hahah
I am sure there are many things there to watch for but I know Steve
will make sure I come home safe. Although there is that life policy he 
keeps asking about being current. hahahhah  LOL

Lynda, we will share lots of pictures when I return. I am glad steve had
such a great group to teach him so much and help him so much through
all the changes of living there. I see alot of mks that don't turn out so 
sound but think you all must have had a good group to keep each other
pretty NORMAL~ hahah Yes my son used to tell steve he does not get it when
he wanted to start driving and told him he can't hop on an elephant to 
get to the next village. hahahha But he also learned so much from him
that he is really starting to see now at age 22. WIsh you were all coming with us
I know that would be a blast. And wow Lynda, you all got married the year I graduated from high school. LOL
